Palms, done the way they're supposed to be done

Palm work in San Diego County has a problem: most "tree services" treat palms like big shrubs, hack them into the dreaded "pineapple" or "hurricane cut," and call it a day. That style of trimming stresses the palm, slows growth, and makes it more vulnerable to wind damage and pest pressure. We don't do it. A correctly pruned palm keeps almost all of its green fronds and only loses the dead, dying, and seed-bearing material.

What we do for them

A standard palm visit covers trimming and shaping, removal of dead and dying fronds, seed-pod removal, and trunk skinning where appropriate. We chip everything in one visit, so there's no pile of fronds left in the side yard. Beyond the basics, we handle deep-root palm fertilization (very different from broadleaf-tree feeding), pest and disease checks (fusarium wilt, palm weevil, scale), and full removals or transplants when the palm has outgrown its spot.

Why timing matters

The best window for most palms in Santee is late spring through summer, after the seed pods have formed but before they drop. Trimming then knocks out fronds, pods, and seasonal cleanup all in one visit. For Mexican fans near a house, we strongly recommend at least one trim before fire season — a built-up skirt of dry fronds is one of the easiest things to remove and one of the hardest things to defend against if a brush fire moves through.
